WEll-Known Weapons
German E-Boat: Originally named the Schnellboot or S-Boot
this ship was nicknamed the E-boat by the British which meant ‘Enemy Boat’. These boats were hard to spot without radar
because they were quieter than the British ships, and they could sustain their
maximum speed in sea states which forced the British back. Over 200 E-Boats were built, and
approximately only half survived the war.
Destroyer Fletcher
Class: This U.S. ship was designed to match the Japanese ‘Special Type’, which was the Fubuki class. 500 tons were added to enhance the anti-aircraft battery
not the surface armament. Because of their reliability 100 Fletchers were ordered following Pearl Harbor, and they proved to
be among the finest destroyers to serve in WWll.
P-51 Mustang: This
plane is claimed to be the best combat aircraft to be used in WWll and to have
marked the transition from piston-engined to jet fighter. This plane would not
have been possible with the British engine. A total of 15,469 P-51 Mustangs
were produced and destroyed approximately 9,081 enemy aircraft both in air
combat and on the ground. P-51 Mustangs
have served in the air forces of about twenty countries, and a few are still
flown today.
Boeing B-17G Flying
Fortress: The B-17G was financed by Boeing and was designed and flight
tested less than 12 months after the Army requested a large, multiengine
bomber. These planes had a bad reputation with the Japanese who called them “four-engine
fighters”, and the good thing was that they could stay up in the air even after
a rough flight.
